The Audre Lorde Project is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit, Trans and Gender Non Conforming People of Color center for community organizing, focusing on the New York City area. Through mobilization, education and capacity-building, they work for community wellness and progressive social and economic justice. Third Wave is funding their Safe OUTside the System (SOS) program, a unique, grassroots model based in Transformative Justice strategies. SOS relies on the community to prevent and ultimately intervene in anti-LGBT violence. Through the Safe Neighborhoods campaign, SOS will recruit and train community-based businesses and institutions to be safe space hubs for LGBTQ youth of color. This strategy will increase the safety of LGBTQ youth in a way that builds accountability within communities without reliance on the criminal/legal system. Link: Audre Lorde Project

Power U seeks to organize low-income communities directly impacted by institutional oppression to create an equitable and just society. Third Wave’s grant will support the POWERful Women and Families project, which addresses maternal and child health disparities in communities of color. Childbirth classes are an entry point for young leaders to engage with Power U’s birthing justice campaign, which advocates for policies that are baby-friendly, support breastfeeding infants and mothers, and expand access to the midwifery model of care within the Jackson Health System.

Justice Now is a human rights organization that partners with people in women’s prisons, former prisoners and people with family in prison to build a safe, compassionate world without prisons. Justice Now bridges movements for reproductive justice, human rights, and prison abolition through their campaign to end so-called “gender-responsive” prison expansion and their Right to Family human rights documentation program. Third Wave’s grant will support Justice Now in their campaign to halt illegal and coercive sterilization in California prisons.

The Colorado Anti-Violence Program is a community-based organization that works to eliminate violence within and against LGBTQ communities, including internalized, interpersonal and institutional violence. Third Wave Foundation’s grant is in support of the Branching Seedz of Resistance: Youth Violence Prevention Project, the first sexual violence prevention project in Colorado to center the experiences, leadership, and organizing capacity of LGBTQ high school-aged youth. Branching Seedz uses art and media, participatory action research, trainings, and community organizing to end cycles of violence and build power and safety. With Third Wave’s Support, Branching Seedz will bring trans-inclusive policies to shelters within Colorado, host a Queer Youth Summit in Denver, and bring their youth training program “Unite to Fight” across the state of Colorado.

The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. Much of SRLP’s work centers around ensuring the right of all people to access the range of healthcare they need and to make their own decisions about their bodies, including trans people and those who are living in poverty or in prison. Third Wave’s grant will support SRLP’s Transgender Youth Initiative, which works to improve safety and access to respectful and affirming social, health, and legal services while simultaneously building the leadership of youth to participate more fully in movements for social justice.
