Make Third Wave a hub for gender justice

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

Dear Friends of Third Wave,

I am writing from the board of the Third Wave Foundation to invite you to join us on an exciting new path as we become a partner fund of the Proteus Fund.

Proteus advances the goals of its partners by providing strategy development, research and fund management. Moving under the Proteus umbrella provides us with a unique opportunity to determine how Third Wave can most effectively bridge existing gaps and leverage untapped opportunities in the feminist youth movement.

Over the next year we will bring together youth leaders from around the country. We will identify areas where Third Wave can build alliances among organizations, connect local, national, and international feminisms, and bring gender justice and trans-inclusivity conversations to new audiences. Third Wave has led the development of a gender justice framework for progressive funders and social justice activists and we are committed to advancing this work in the years ahead.

Just as we have connected Third Wave grant recipients in the past, we will be poised to learn from the experiences of other Proteus foundations focused on issues such as structural racism, racial injustice, marriage equality, and policy change more broadly. Operating as a fund within Proteus will also enable us to channel a higher percentage of assets to youth leadership development.

We need your support during this exciting next phase of our work. Our goals are ambitious: we need to raise $50,000 by the end of the year to make Third Wave a hub for gender justice donors and to connect in meaningful ways with feminist youth leaders who are advancing social justice in effective and innovative ways. Will you help us with a gift today?

As always, thank you for your generosity, commitment, and partnership!

In solidarity,

Third Wave Board of Directors

Media Literacy Project receives F.I.R.E. award for their media education work!

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

One of our grant partners, Media Literacy Project (MLP) was honored at the 1st Fueling Increasingly Relevant Education (F.I.R.E.) Awards on October 11th. This award recognizes educators and organizations promoting social justice and equity in the classroom and in the community. MLP delivers media literacy to communities all around New Mexico through their comprehensive trainings and specialized programs, including teaching media production skills to young women of color and organizing other youth initiatives addressing media justice issues. Third Wave is proud to support MLP in their mission to create “a world where all people and communities have affordable access to utilize any and all media tools to ensure their self-determination and a healthy media landscape.” -MLP Mission Statement

The F.I.R.E. Award was presented by the New Mexico Education Equity Alliance (NMEEA), a collective of youth, community members, educators, and allies that believes that every child has a right to a high quality, equitably funded, public education. Similar to MLP, NMEEA supports campaigns to get more voices of educators, students, and community into the public discussion of school policies. MLP recently participated  in an initiative with Families United for Education to give families more say in the Albuquerque Public Schools Family.
